A potential cure against traffic jam
How can cars go quicker and cheaper through cities – while polluting less? Researchers from AU Smart Cities have taken the first step towards an answer.
Many European cities are implementing costly technological equipment to oversee and direct traffic – all with the purpose of eliminating traffic jam. However, there might be a smarter solution, one which can not only create an overview of the present traffic situation but also predict how the flow of cars will be distributed.
Professor Peter Gorm Larsen, Head of the Software Engineering Group at Aarhus University’s School of Engineering, and one of the key researchers in the AU Smart Cities Executive Research Committe, have – in collaboration with Danish and international colleagues – developed a new, sophisticated simulation technology. They are currently adjusting it in order to create highly detailed traffic forecasts; forecasts that can be used to manage traffic.
The concept is based on using the navigation systems in the single vehicles, and the researchers predict that they will have the first technological proof of concept done within a year.
